Armageddon - designed by Apple in California

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

No, this is not yet another rant about missing the Mustang in Leopard. The unofficial Apple weblog writes about the iComet, which is a picture of a comet in the shape of the Apple logo.

If we go, then at least we go out with style: Armageddon, designed by Apple in California.

Wicket in Action - progress update

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Both Eelco and I are working hard to get the book out. Trust me when I say that the people most anxiously awaiting the final chapter are Eelco and myself. The book has been a millstone around our necks for a while now and you can’t imagine the personal toll we both have paid whilst writing this book.

The book itself is progressing good. Our editor will post a new version of the MEAP the coming week with updates to chapters 1 through 4 and a brand spanking new chapter added to the mix: chapter 6. Eelco just released a new version of chapter 12 and is waiting for comments.

I’m in the process of chopping chapter 7 (Forms) from 38 pages to a more manageable 28 or so.

Like I said in a previous post: “Goed schrijven is schrappen” (To write well is to scrap)

Java Framework Shoot out

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Fred Daoud has written a different take on the Language Wars trolls. This time it is about the endless war and trolling between the various web frameworks that occur on the various community websites and even between blogs.

Priceless comments:

JSF (hanging his head): <f:verbatim>Sorry..</f:verbatim>

Wicket: Hey JSF, race you to write a custom component! GO!

Facelets: hold on now.. (dials cell phone).. let me call Seam and see what we can do.. find a vendor..

Wicket: FINISHED! I win!

And I also broke out in laughter reading further:

RIFE: (starts to say something)

(somebody interrupts)

Moderator: quiet, RIFE was talking, let him finish!

RIFE: No problem, I can easily continue what I was saying.. (finishes what he was saying, using a different template syntax, er, a different accent..)

(this is of course a priceless reference to RIFE’s continuations support).

To fully appreciate the discussion, read the whole framework discussion here. It’ll put a smile on your face!

OS X - where’s Java 6?

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

I’ve eschewed downloading the Java 6 developer preview from Apple’s Developer Center since it was over a year old. And with Leopard around the corner, where is the much needed love for Java coming from Apple? Remember that OS X would be the number one Java development platform?

300 new features, but no mention of Java. I’d really hate to take James Gosling’s route and resort to using other operating systems to be able to continue to work for my company (we’re already deploying to Java 6).

The only quote I could find about Java on the Apple Leopard developer site was:

“You can even use 64-bit Java on capable Intel processors.”

Where’s the love?!?

Becoming a better writer

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

The positivity blog lists seven tips from Stephen King for becoming a better writer:

  1. Get to the point, goes hand in hand with:
  2. Cut down your text (MD: “Goed schrijven is schrappen”, lit. Good writing means scrapping)
  3. Write a draft. Then let it rest (MD: works wonders for code too!)
  4. Be relatable and honest
  5. Don’t care too much what others may think (MD: though listen to your editor!)
  6. Read a lot
  7. Write a lot (MD: writing more gives you a better style, and makes you more proficient)

I can relate to these points a lot. Though I don’t have enough time to read, and writing a draft to leave it for a couple of months is not an option anymore.
