Wicket March 2008 news roundup

A lot has happened and still happening in Wicket land this month. Here’s a summary:

  • Eelco got married (actually in Februari but who’s counting)
  • We spent a great deal of time on an exotic beach in Thailand celebrating that fact
  • Wicket in Action is now in production, meaning that Eelco and I are spending our evenings (and part of the night) applying copy editor improvements, indexing and creating production ready images
  • Apache Wicket 1.3.2 has been released
  • Wicket in Action is the best selling MEAP book for Manning
  • Maurice Marrink has joined the Wicket team
  • A new Wicket Community Meetup is in the works (April 8th, Amsterdam)
  • The next Wicket version will be a quick one: only generics and a migration to Java 5 (at least looking at the vote results so far)

You are invited to the Wicket meetup, and to cast your vote for the (immediate) future of Wicket.

Wicket Amsterdam Meetup on Tuesday April 8th 2008

We are announcing a special Wicket community event: on Tuesday April
8th 2008 the next Apache Wicket Community Meetup will be held in
Amsterdam just prior to ApacheCon.

This Meetup will be a low-barrier community driven event and free to
attend, thanks to the generous sponsoring by Hippo and Topicus. With
the Apache Wicket Community Meetup we like to bring together not only
project committers from Apache Wicket but also our community users and
other interested parties.

Wicket in Action: completely available from MEAP

Finally for all of you that have waited and waited: Wicket in Action is fully available through the early access program. We are in
production mode, and all the chapters are available from the MEAP. We
hope to have the printed version available somewhere around JavaOne.

You can download all the chapters through the link provided by Manning’s announcement. If you haven’t bought the book yet, you can order it through the Manning Early Access Program here.

Wicket in Action – fit for production

We just received word that our years old project, Wicket in Action, has been approved for production. WOOHOO!!!!

There is light at the end of the tunnel. We are now renumbering the chapters (chapter 3 – setting up shop has been removed from the manuscript and will be made available as a free download) and getting them ready for copy-editing.

Wicket Amsterdam 2008 Meetup

It is meetup time again! Our previous Amsterdam Meetup was a big success
and we want to continue that tradition. Over 80 Wicket developers
attended the previous meetup and we had a blast. If you have missed
the previous meetup from Nov 30th, 2007 you can see the pictures, or enjoy the presentations.

Join us at the Wicket meetup in Amsterdam prior to ApacheCon EU 2008.
Impress your boss with a deeper understanding of Wicket, or the new
treasure chest of components that have been unveiled at the meetup.
Meet other Wicket developers and share your hopes, victories and
frustrations. Expand your network of Wicket developers!

A final date has not been set yet, and we ask everyone to fill in
their preference. The possible dates for our meetup are:

  • Friday April 4th,
  • Monday April 7th, and
  • Tuesday April 8th.

Sign up for the meetup here and show us your preference.

I hope to see you in Amsterdam!
